Chapter Twenty-Three
Although Margaretâs untimely death hung like a cloud over Ronnie and the others, apart from Angela who never actually referred to her, except to say how silly she was to take such a risk in the dark, Bobâs meat and vegetable pie was a great success that evening. Ronnie had told Jessica on the quiet what had happened.
âIâll disguise it,â Jessica chuckled. âI guarantee Angela wonât notice the difference.â
Although the potatoes had run out, there was plenty of cabbage, making a hearty meal. Ronnie was so hungry she forced herself to put all thoughts of poor Margaret to one side and enjoy it. Sheâd think about Margaret when she was quiet and on her own. She grimaced. Whenever that would be possible.
âSuch a treat having pastry,â Jessica said, licking her lips after she laid down her knife and fork. âIâd make it in the boat if there was room.â
Ronnie couldnât help a smile. If Angela knew the dinner had fallen into the snow sheâd have thrown a fit. Dad used to say, when they were on that one and only camping holiday, what people didnât know wouldnât hurt them. He was referring to Maman though he was too loyal to say so. She looked at Angela, who was eating slowly and, judging by her satisfied expression, savouring every mouthful, even though sheâd made no comment at all. Suddenly, Ronnie felt the devil in her.
âAre you enjoying it, Angela?â
âBest meal Iâve had since weâve been on this trip,â Angela said, concentrating on her fork where a small piece of meat and carrot clung to the prongs.
âGood job Constable Scott saved it.â
Angelaâs head shot up. âWhat are you talking about?â
âOh, I dropped the basket and the pie fell out of the dish into the snow. But he came to the rescue and picked it all up again and shoved the broken pieces back together. It was so thoughtful of him.â She gave a peal of laughter. âJess had to make some extra gravy so you couldnât tell when she dished up.â She winked at Jessica who gave a surreptitious nod.
âYou mean this pieâs been rolling about in the snow?â Angela said, her fork frozen in mid-air, her pale eyes staring at Ronnie.
âThere was no damage to the dish,â Ronnie said. âThank goodness. It would have been embarrassing having to explain to the landlord who cooked it, after his kindness.â
âI donât care a monkeyâs about the blasted dish,â Angelaâs voice rose. She banged her knife and fork down on the plate and sprang up. âIâm going to the motor to warn the others that their dinnerâs been in the snow.â She glared at Ronnie. âYouâre disgusting.â
âThe snow was perfectly clean, if thatâs what youâre worried about,â Ronnie said, biting back her laughter. âThere was no sign of any footprints.â
âAnd Iâm sure that reheating it has probably killed most of the germs,â Jessica called to Angelaâs stocky figure as the woman disappeared through the hatch.
Ronnie couldnât contain herself any longer. All the pent-up emotion of the day gushed out and she clung on to Jess, screaming with laughter.
